Superstar Supervision: How to be a Great Boss

Sarah Murphy-Kangas and I will be presenting this FREE series for WWU's Small Business Development Center! If you're a Whatcom County leader or small business owner, you don't want to miss it. Come to one or all three of the sessions!

Healthy, productive organizations are characterized by leaders who know how to give hard feedback, are approachable, and can effectively communicate in groups of any size. These short, interactive sessions will focus on your own development as a skilled communicator and leave you with practical strategies to begin applying right away!

SBDC will be hosting two lunchtime leadership development talks for local business owners at Dorothy Haggen Center at Barkley Village. Sign up with Small Business Development Center and bring your lunch and learn about these important topics:

Session 1: The Magic Combination of Support and Accountability (November 8). If all you do is encourage your staff, they may be under-performing. If all you do is hold them accountable, they may be dispirited or unhappy! Great bosses understand that’s it the magic combination of both support AND accountability that keeps teams healthy. This session will give you practical skills for embodying and implementing that winning combination.

Session 2: The Tricky Team: Supervising Friends or Family (November 15). In a smaller marketplace like Whatcom County and with so many family businesses, it’s very common that you’re supervising someone you have a personal relationship with—an acquaintance, friend, or family member. This can be wonderful, and it can also be very tricky. This session will focus on how you can design your relationships with those folks to maximize both parts of your relationship—your friendship/family connection AND your professional roles.

Enneagram at Work

Taught by Sarah Murphy-Kangas and Laura Todd, this workshop is open to Enneagram learners of all levels, though having an introductory knowledge of the Enneagram is recommended.

As a psycho-spiritual tool for transformation, the Enneagram is also a very practical workplace help--how can you understand your boss better? Why do you connect with some teammates better than others? How can you use your type to be a better leader? What's your driving motivation, and how does that affect the way you show up at work?

We encourage participants to come with one (or more) team members from your workplace, or someone you're collaborating with. We find that the learning is richer when folks are learning it together and taking their insights outside the workshop.

Cost: $60/student or $50/student if you come with someone else! Register here on Sarah's Events Page

CANCELLED: The Dynamic Enneagram: Wings and Arrows

Taught by Sarah Murphy-Kangas and Laura Todd, This workshop is designed for Enneagram learners who already know their type and want to explore further. In addition to our primary types, each number has WINGS (numbers to the right and left on the symbol) and ARROWS, movement toward two other numbers in stress or in security. Understanding your wings and arrows can give you greater access to the full energy of the Enneagram and detailed descriptions of how you show up in healthy and less healthy ways. This workshop will help you go deeper into your type, give ample time for silence and personal reflection, and do what the Enneagram does best--give you more lightness about yourself, more understanding of others, and more of an ability to see into the essence of things.

Begins Friday night, September 29, 6:30pm-9:00 pm
Resumes again Saturday, September 30, 9:00am-4:00 pm

SBDC will be hosting three lunchtime leadership development talks for local business owners at our new office, located on Cornwall in downtown Bellingham. Bring your lunch and learn about these important topics:

Session 1: Giving Feedback: The Coaching Leader (November 10, 11:45-1:00).
Have you ever lost sleep before a difficult conversation? Participants will learn how to deliver feedback in a way that lowers the listener's defenses and is both kind and direct. This essential toolkit can be used by anyone to bring greater accountability, clarity, and alignment in businesses of any size.

Session 2: Receiving Feedback: The Approachable Leader (November 17, 11:45-1:00).
If you haven't received honest feedback about your leadership lately, it might mean you're not approachable enough! This session will give you a window into how approachable you are and skills to increase the likelihood that your staff will talk TO you instead of about you.

Session 3: Running Great Meetings: The Facilitative Leader (December 1, 11:45-1:00).
Meetings can be the bane of a leader's existence. But it doesn't have to be that way! Learn a few tips to make your meetings lively, productive, and relevant-just-in-time agendas, managing participants' airtime, and creating engagement instead of report-outs.

Blossom Life Academy Offers Yoga Nidra & Sound Bath

Becky Pezely and Elizabeth Ruff will be guiding you into a blissful evening filled with stillness, gentle yoga and sound bathing.

WHAT IS A SOUND BATH?

A sound bath is an improvised concert of crystal bowls, gong, and vocal toning. The term "sound bath" is used because participants lay on the floor (in savasana) and are bathed by the vibrations of sound. The vibrations help entrain the brain into a “meditative” state whichpromotes rejuvenation and healing in the body.
